Moving More

Most people have the understanding that they need to move in order to burn the calories that we are consuming, keep ourselves fit and moving the way we are supposed to be able to. We all know that it needs to be done but there always seems to be an excuse not to do it. We don’t have the time, You’re not motivated or you’re worried about injury. Whatever it maybe it’s time to try and move past it.

Some people think about the word exercise and instantly think that they need to start a scheduled routine of exercise, train for something or go for a run every day, however, exercise is merely movement and you can easily add more of this into your daily routine without needing to run around the block 5 times a week. Every time you move more than you normally would its exercise.  A great way to track this kind of activity is with a smartwatch as they show you when you’re in a burn zone and when you’ve had active times.

Saying that it is fantastic if you can commit to spending extra time exercising, meaning you’re sweating and pushing your heart rate in order to strengthen your body. But it’s not always possible for all so making small changes can help too.

Try walking to work or getting off the bus stop before, taking the stairs instead of the escalator or gong for a short walk on lunch.  Moderate activities like housework, gardening and walking can make a difference too.

Making the effort to move more has several benefits including:

  • Reduces the risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
  • Improves your joints- meaning in old age you’re going to benefit.
  • Improves increases your mobility- again another thing to take you into old age too.
  • It helps to maintain and improve flexibility.
  • Looks after your bone mass.
  • Prevents osteoporosis and fractures.
  • It improves your mood and can help to alleviate symptoms of stress and depression.
  • Enhances self-esteem.
  • It can improve your memory power.
  • It helps to control your stress levels.

Even the smallest of changes can help to see an improvement in all these areas, it can even help you to maintain a reasonable weight for your body type.

If you do struggle with your weight like most, reducing your body mass by five to ten percent can have a massive impact on your health and help prevent high cholesterol, blood sugars, and lower blood pressure. It’s best not to focus on weight and just aim for a healthy lifestyle.

Some of the easy things you can try include:

  • Try once a week, turning off the TV and computer and doing something a little more physical with your family instead of sitting around. You could play games, take a walk, or do almost anything that will be more active than watching a film or tv program.
  • Make an effort to walk- Take the dog out for an extra walk, walk to the shop, take the stairs whatever it maybe just try to involve walking a little bit more often.
  • Do some housework, we all have to do housework anyway so why not use it to our advantage, try doing things such as hoovering the stairs, raking leaves or gardening as these have more hidden potential than just wiping the side down. You also have the added benefit of having the house in tip-top condition.
  • Pace- If you have to speak on the phone pace at the same time, or even do some cleaning while you’re chatting to your mum, it’s a great way to keep moving without even realizing.
  • Add in more when you’re ready- Only add in more when you’re ready, if you’ve got yourself in a good routine with the extra little bits start adding in an extra walk or maybe a run once in a while and see how you feel from there.

Think About Your Food

Alongside your movement you can start to think about your food and what you’re feeding your body, some considerations to make include:

  • Eat more fruit – OK, so it’s easier said than done but look to add it to things such as your breakfast, dinners or in a desert, fruit also makes a great number one snack.
  • Hide the veg- It’s really easy to sneak in more veggies without noticing, add them to your pasta sauce, add tomatoes to your sandwiches or add a few extra veggies to your pizza.
  • Try making switches such as olive spread rather than full-fat butter.
  • Eat low-fat or fat-free dairy.
  • Make some substitutions. If you have high calorie or fatty foods as a favorite try to find healthier options to replace it with.
